In 1960 fewer than two Jews in five were born in the country. By 2024 four in five were. Israeli-born Jews became the majority between 1970 and 1980. Both foreign-born groups shrank steadily, and Soviet immigration slowed the decline of the Europe and Americas group around 1990.

Sources. CBS figures for 1960 to 1996 as compiled by the Jewish Virtual Library. CBS 2008 figures as given on Wikipedia. CBS 2024 as reported in the April 2026 CBS release, which says about 81 percent of Jews in Israel were born in Israel and does not split the rest. The Israel-born group includes the children of immigrants. The compiled 1980 figures add to only 95.4 percent, and the source does not explain the gap, so the missing 4.6 percent is shown in gray. One of the three printed 1980 values is probably a typo. The 2024 gray is the foreign-born share, 19 percent, which the release does not split by region. “Jews” here excludes the “Others” category.
