Declaration of Independence מגילת העצמאות

Events

The proclamation of the State of Israel, read by David Ben-Gurion on 14 May 1948 in the Tel Aviv Museum on Rothschild Boulevard, hours before the British Mandate ended. It announced "the establishment of a Jewish state in Eretz Israel, to be known as the State of Israel," promised equal rights to all citizens and appealed to its Arab neighbors for peace. The United States recognized the new state within minutes. The next day the armies of five Arab states invaded, widening the War of Independence.
