Jewish sect of the Second Temple period that, according to Josephus and other ancient writers, lived in strict communities, shared property and stressed ritual purity. Many scholars link them to the settlement at Qumran and the Dead Sea Scrolls, though others dispute the connection. They vanish from the record after the revolt against Rome.
