Between 1949 and 1967 Israel's coastal plain near Netanya was only about 15 kilometers wide, from the armistice line to the sea. Most of the population and industry lay within range of the hills of Judea and Samaria. The narrow waist is a central argument in debates over defensible borders and the future of the hill country.
