Siege of Jerusalem (1948) המצור על ירושלים

Events

From early 1948 Arab forces cut the only road from the coast to Jerusalem at Bab al-Wad, leaving about 100,000 Jews short of food, water and ammunition. Convoys fought their way up the road, and the burned armored trucks left along it are still kept as memorials. In May the Jordanian Arab Legion shelled the city and the Jewish Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem surrendered on 28 May. The siege was broken in June when the Burma Road was opened around Latrun.
