HISTORICAL MAPS

Invasion and massacres in the Gaza envelope

On the morning of the Jewish holy day of Simchat Torah, Hamas led a simultaneous wave of assaults on Israeli civilian communities and military bases. The dawn attack began when Hamas launched over 5,000 rockets from Gaza into Israel, then used these barrages as cover to breach the border.

In this massive surprise onslaught on southern Israel, Hamas terrorists and other Gazans committed heinous atrocities, including widespread sexual violence against women. The attack immediately led to war.

The attacks claimed the lives of over 1,192 individuals. 800 of the bodies were civilians. They left over 4,834 people wounded and led to 251 people being taken hostage. Additionally, some bodies remained unidentified due to substantial mutilation.

Of the 251 people taken hostage on October 7, some were released in negotiations, some were rescued by the IDF, and many were murdered or died in captivity. The last living hostages returned on October 13, 2025. The body of the last hostage, Ran Gvili, was returned on January 26, 2026, and all 251 are now home. Among the survivors, women have described sexual abuse by their captors.

Israeli estimates of the number of breaches in the border fence range from about 30 to 119, and some 6,000 people are thought to have crossed. Video evidence verifies six breach points, which are marked on the map. The circles show the number killed at each site and the labels give the number kidnapped. The October 7 project publishes an interactive map with data on each incident.
