Approximate share of drinking water from desalination. Israel in blue. Estimates from various years.
Israel makes about four fifths of its household water from the Mediterranean in five large plants at Ashkelon, Hadera, Sorek, Palmachim and Ashdod. The Gulf states, which have little fresh water, rely on desalination as well, with Kuwait and Oman higher than Israel and Saudi Arabia and the UAE lower.
The figures are rounded estimates from different years and sources, and the definitions differ, so the chart shows scale and not a precise ranking. No comparable figure was found for Iran or Egypt, which use rivers and groundwater.
Sources. Israel, about 80 percent of household water, as reported from Israel Water Authority data in press coverage in 2026. Kuwait 90, Oman 86, Saudi Arabia 70 and UAE 42
