Israel sits on the southeast shore of the Mediterranean Sea, at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and Africa. Its area is about 22,000 square kilometers (8,500 square miles), the size of New Jersey, bordered by Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Egypt.

On this map Israel is a sliver. The 22 members of the Arab League cover about 13.1 million square kilometers, roughly 600 times Israel’s area, and hold about 481 million people, nearly 50 times Israel’s population of about 10 million.

Peace is growing even so. Egypt and Jordan signed peace treaties, and in 2020 the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Morocco joined the Abraham Accords. Yet Israel is offensive in the eyes of some neighbors, and wars and terror are orchestrated these days from Tehran through Iran’s proxies. The main thing, says Rabbi Nachman of Breslov, is to be unafraid.
