Arabian leopard

A shadow in the desert cliffs

נמר ערביPanthera pardus nimr

The Arabian leopard is a small, pale leopard that survives in remote, rocky canyons of the Judean desert and the Negev. It is extremely rare, and only a handful of animals remain in Israel. The few photographs of it come from motion-triggered cameras set up by researchers. It hunts hyraxes and ibex at night and avoids people. Protecting it is a major conservation effort, and the Nature and Parks Authority monitors the cliffs. Visitors almost never see one.
