The Haredi share of Jewish Israelis was about 6 percent in 1948 and was an estimated 5 percent by 1980. It then rose to 12.5 percent in 2009 and 17.7 percent in 2024. Haredi population growth is near 4 percent a year, about twice the national rate.

Sources. 1948: an estimated 35,000 to 45,000 Haredim, taken at 40,000, against about 717,000 Jews. 1980: about 4 percent of residents, converted here to a share of Jews. 2009, 2015 and 2024: Israel Democracy Institute, Annual Statistical Report on Haredi Society, calculated as Haredim over all Jews. 2018: the Institute’s estimate of 15 percent. The early figures are estimates and the definition of Haredi differs between sources. This page counts everyone in Haredi households, children included, so it is higher than the share of adults who call themselves Haredi on the next page.
