MAP 18 The Six-Day War
June 5 to 11, 1967
After diplomacy failed miserably and Jordan joined the Egyptian-Syrian alliance, Israel faced an immediate existential threat, isolated in the world. On June 5, 1967, Israel launched a surprise airstrike, Operation Focus, destroying most of Egypt’s air force and securing air superiority.
Jordan and Syria responded with attacks on Israel, prompting fierce battles on multiple fronts. In Jerusalem, Israeli forces reunited the city, capturing its eastern neighborhoods, including the Western Wall.
In the Sinai, Israel pushed Egyptian forces back to the Suez Canal.
On the northern front, Israeli troops secured the Golan Heights, ending years of Syrian shelling of Israeli communities.
By the war’s end, Israel had captured eastern Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria, the Sinai Peninsula, and the Golan Heights, tripling its land area. The swift victory reshaped Israel’s strategic position but heightened tensions over the newly acquired territories.
